Port Sunlight RFC - A Brief History
Port Sunlight Rugby Club, or as it was originally called, the Cosmopolitan R.F.C. was founded in 1908.
The initial meeting of the club took place in the Collegium, Port Sunlight in February 1908 and the rather mixed character of the company of the enthusiasts present gave the originator of the name, a Mr Chadwick his cue to the name the club the Cosmopolitan.
The first colours adopted were Blue and Red banded jerseys and black shorts.

Practice games in the very first season, took place on a piece of waste ground behind Winstanley Road, New Ferry under the tuition of Mr T. Peacock (First Chairman) and Mr R.S. Bailey, an old Cumberland player.
For the commencement of the 1908 – 9 season, the club played on Stonehill Park, Bebington on a piece of ground rented from Mr. Robert Bemfield.
One of the first games ever played was with Hamilton “A”, at Birkenhead Park. Hamilton winning by 1 goal 6 tries to nil (23pts – 0pts).
Frequent games were interchanged with Ashford House, who also played at Stonehill Park. Unfortunately, there is no record of the games or results for this season, the first fixture card was not being issued until the next season.
At the invitation of the club, W.H. Lever Esq. M.P. became the first President.
The first appointed officials were:-
- Chairman Mr Thomas Peacock
- Vice Chairman Mr Robert S Bailey
- Captain Mr Alfred Powell
- Vice Captain Mr Fred Statham
- Secretary Mr A. Briggs – Watson
The club became affiliated with the Cheshire Rugby Football Union on October 11th 1909, being proposed by Hamilton and seconded by our then ground sharers Ashford House. The clubs then in the Union, in order of seniority, were Sale, Birkenhead Park, New Brighton, Bowden Rangers, Ashford House, Stockton Heath, Cheadle Hulme, Hamilton and Marple. As Bowden, Ashford, Stockton, Cheadle, Hamilton and Marple all gone out of existence, Port Sunlight are now 5th in order of seniority. Winnington Park joined in 1911.
The first ever tour was at Easter 1911, when the club visited the Isle of Man and played Mona on Easter Saturday and Derby on Easter Monday.
